Too often work overtime is not good for health and increase the risk of dying young. But according to a recent study, the risk of dying young from too much work can be reduced if co-workers have fun and enjoyable.
The study revealed that interpersonal relationships with coworkers affects life expectancy of an employee. The more comfortable and feel happy when partnered with co-workers, the greater the chances for long-lived.
This fact was revealed in research conducted at Tel Aviv University which involved 820 adults of all ages. All participants are employees of companies from various fields, with an average duration of work 8.8 hours every day.
In the observation period of 20 years, 53 of whom died due to various reasons including illness and accidents. When compared with the work environment factors, the mortality rate on the employees that are less happy with his colleagues tend to be higher.
Effect of relationships with colleagues of the largest observed death rate in participants aged 38-43 years. Even when adjusted for other risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the influence of relationships with colleagues are still very high.
"This finding is important to support health in the workplace. Improved support from colleagues could reduce the risk of dying young in our employees," write the researchers in the journal Health Psychology, as quoted by LiveScience, Monday (16/05/2011).
Interestingly, this study found no relationship between the risk of death with the relationship between karwawan dengna boss or subordinates. That is, the effect was only observed in co-workers most likely to give each other psychological support.
Previously, researchers from University College London revealed that working hours are too long can increase the risk of dying prematurely, especially from heart attack. Than 7,000 public servants who were observed for 11 years, 192 meningggal of a heart attack due to work up to 11 hours / day.
