Refill water should Boiled Again

Jakarta, Buying water can be drunk directly in depots refill drinking water increasingly interested public. But preferably, water purchased from the depot be cooked again before drinking.

Although water depots refill it with clean water recycle existing standards using tools such as ultraviolet filters or other materials, but not guaranteed, especially E. coli bacteria will be lost.

"On average, 50 percent of water refill contains E. coli bacteria, therefore the public are advised to cook it again before drinking," says Dr R Budi Haryanto, SKM, M. Kes, MSc in event Unilever Pureit: Technology Ready Drinking Water purifier Sheltered from Germs Infectious dangerous at Planet Hollywood on Tuesday (19/10/2010).

Budi said that based on research conducted by students FKM UI in 2009 in the area Cimanggis, West Java is known that water refill depots containing E. coli bacteria and is associated with diarrhea in infants who eat them.

"The risk of infant diarrhea 3 times higher in infants who consume water refill compared with infants who do not eat. This is because the water is usually drunk straight," said the lecturer FKM UI.

Diarrhea was ranked second as a cause of death of infants and toddlers who drink contaminated water will have a higher risk. This phenomenon indicates the importance of water treatment methods are effective and efficient, so that water can be consumed free of harmful microorganisms.

Budi said the process used by the depot refill is actually correct, and ultraviolet filters used as it can be used to filter bacteria or chemical compounds contained in the water.

"But the problem is who can guarantee that the filters were replaced regularly, as you usually keep the depot is not the owner who already receive training but other people. For that oversight should be tightened," said a lecturer who was born in Malang, 51 years ago.

If people still consume water from the refill depots, then that water should be cooked again or passed on a hot water dispenser to reduce bacterial contamination.
